PRELIMINARY LOGO SKETCHES
Two different approaches were taken with the preliminary sketches of a monogram for Shaun White. One approach described Shaun White as a snowboarder, an Olympian, and active, and the other approach described him as casual, relaxed, and calm. Each thumbnail sketch incorporated his three initials, SRW for Shaun Roger White.

The magazine masthead was an extension of the monogram for Shaun Roger White. It was intended to look as a pattern that could be used on the bottom of a snowboard if desired. "Close to Heaven. Down to Earth." is the tagline for this lifestyle magazine known as Shaun White Magazine or its abbreviation SRW.

For this magazine cover, Shaun Roger White was being described as a snowboarder, an Olympian, and active. Having both the figure and the background of the masthead simultaneously attracting the viewer’s attention calls on the very nature of an athlete themselves. An athlete is so much more than what you might see when they perform. The silhouette of the snowboarder allows the reader to imagine it could be them doing those amazing tricks, which also makes the entire magazine more relatable and more marketable.

​Within the ad and the quote from Shaun White, the words that seemed to be the most important were “snowboards” and “souls”, especially because it ties in well with the entire identity of the magazine itself—it is a snowboarding lifestyle magazine with the header “Close to Heaven. Down to Earth.”, which speaks about the personality and soul of a person. These words were brought to attention by relating them to the identity of the magazine masthead.
